M-banking Collections (Mkaro)

Co-operative bank has built a mobile based collection platform that allows registered mobile money transfer customers to deposit money directly to Co-operative bank accounts

These payments allow the sender to narrate/reference the payment with ease.

This being a collection service for customers with accounts at Co-operative bank, it offers an opportunity to receive payments from customers who do not need to visit a bank branch to make a deposit but they can do this from wherever they are as long as they are either Mpesa registered users or Co-operative bank mbanking registered users.

Beneficiaries of this funds collection service are;

  1. Schools/Colleges/Educational Institutions for Fees collections
  2. Insurance Companies for premium collections
  3. Saccos-for members contributions and loans repayments
  4. ‘Chamas’/Investment groups or self help groups for members contribution collections & advances repayment
  5. Churches & religious organizations for donations/Offerings/Tithes collections
  6. Utility Companies (water/electricity/Internet) for utility bills collections
  7. Estate management companies-for service charge & rent collection
  8. Mortgage companies-for mortgage repayment collections
  9. Members clubs/sports clubs/Health clubs for subscription collections

How to make payments

How to Pay (M-pesa Paybill number 400222)

  1. Select PayBill option from Mpesa menu
  2. When asked for business number, Enter 400222
  3. When asked for the account number, input the institution code (provided by Institution), followed by #, followed by the narration for the payment (could be bill number, student number, membership number, house number depending on the payment you are making). E.g if institution code is 1 and payment reference is student number 9871, then type 1#9871 then select ok. To confirm institution code click here: MKARO Institution Codes.xls
  4. select ok
  5. Input AMOUNT+ Kes 35
  6. Input your Mpesa Pin and choose Ok.
  7. Confirm all details are correct before sending.

The customer will receive two confirmation SMSs as follows.

M-PESA will send the standard Pay Bill confirmation SMS immediately after carrying out the transaction. This notification will confirm that funds have been transferred to Co-operative bank collection account.

The bank will then send an SMS to the customer, notifying the customer that funds have been applied to the institution’s bank account

If payment details are valid, the payment is processed within 30 minutes


  1. Dial *667#.
  2. Select option 6-payments
  3. Select type of payment-either fees or merchant payment
  4. Input the institution code
  5. Input the reference number for the payment
  6. input the amount to pay
  7. confirm payment details when asked to
  8. Input your M-banking pin.

Once payment is received, you will receive a confirmation SMS from Co-opbank with the payment details.
Requirements for an Institution to register for the collection service are;

  1. Fill in an application form (download form here: M-banking Collections Application Form.pdf
  2. Filling in the enclosed Internet banking application form (in the event that you are not already signed onto Co-opnet) specifying the users to be created. This form must be signed by the authorised signatories of the schools bank account.
  3. Present the fully filled application forms to the nearest Co-operative Bank branch or to your dedicated Relationship Manager to enable registration and allocation of a unique institution Code that the customers will be using to make payments as described above.
  4. Customer records in soft copy with the following details in the specified order;
  1. Student ID/Reference number/member number/policy holder number
  2. Customer name

The data will enable the bank to validate payments using the quoted payment reference number in order to minimize reconciliation issues.


Payments to a wrong but existing institution code

These payments will go through and the customer will be able to tell from the confirmation SMS sent by Co-opbank since the SMS provides the name of the institution the payment has been made to.

The customer will call our call centre or branch to lodge the complaint. If the customer calls, the complaint is allocated to the Branch where the institution account is held for resolution on best effort basis by the Branch.

Payments to a nonexistent Institution Code

These payments will be reversed automatically to the customers float account in case of M-pesa payments.
In case of M-banking payments, the customer will not be able to proceed with the payment unless an existing code is specified.

Co-op Card Local Visa

The card allows you convenience of settling bills such as hospital, legal, air tickets, restaurants, etc, without the risk of carrying hard cash. This card works at all VISA outlets within the country.

  • After spending, the card offers a credit free period of up to 50 days before payment is due and at that time the customer has the option of paying full amount due or only 10% of the total spent or Ksh.100= whichever is greater.
  • The card allows the customer to a cash advance through any Visa branded outlets.
  • It allows a cash advance equivalent to Ksh.10, 000= per day, but not exceeding your total limit.

Co-op Card International Visa Classic

In addition to the advantages enjoyed by Local Classic cardholders, those with International Classic enjoy a higher limit and they can use their card worldwide wherever they see a Visa branded outlet.

It allows a cash advance equivalent to Ksh.20, 000= per day (If credit is available).

The card can also be used for online transactions

Co-op Card Gold Visa

This is a premium credit card. In addition to all the facilities enjoyed by Local and International Card holders, Gold Card International has the following added advantages:

  • Visa International also does negotiate special discounts for Gold Cardholders with the Airlines, hotels, and hospitals.
  • Can be used to settle payments abroad; including online transactions
  • It gives the holder an International standing and prestige.
  • The card limit is above Ksh.200, 000=.
